19th & 20th Century Architecture: Essay #3: MN Modern

This assignment was written by Jessica Ainsworth-Truong for use in post-secondary education.  This assignment is not to be used by others without written consent.

Assignment:

In the text and in lecture, we have learned about the rules of the International Style and how nationalistic designers adapted the IS to work within their culture.  An example would be Aalto’s use of flat roofs at the Villa Mairea (IS) along with the wood siding (Finnish).

For your assignment, I want you to create a blend of the International Style with nationalism from Minnesota.  What elements from the IS do you feel are appropriate to continue?  Why?  What elements of Minnesota (its culture, geography, geology and climate to name a few) would you use to take the design in another direction?  Why?  Use your knowledge of the International Style and your observation of Minnesota vernacular to create a convincing argument.

Please include images that inform your paper.  Images do not contribute to the length of the text.
