Building Materials: Photo Documentation Journal

Assignment

  • Complete all tasks for each of the following MasterFormat Divisions:

    • 3 Concrete,
    • 4 Masonry (Brick),
    • 4 Masonry (Stone),
    • 5 Metals,
    • 6 Woods, Plastics and Composites (Wood)
    • 6 Woods, Plastics and Composites (Plastic/composite),
    • 9 Finishes (Acoustic Ceiling Tiles)
    • 9 Finishes (Wallcovering)

Tasks

  • Photograph one (1) successful use of the material – interiorInclude location, date and time of photograph MUST BE VISITED IN PERSON
    • Identify material(s) in image
      1. In 1-2 paragraphs, explain why it is a successful use of the material
    • Photograph one (1) unsuccessful use of the material – interior
      1. Include location, date and time of photograph MUST BE VISITED IN PERSON
      2. Identify material(s) in image
      3. In 1-2 paragraphs, explain why it is an unsuccessful use of the material
    • Assess sustainability of material
      1. Using what you have learned in lecture, the book and observing the built environment:
        • List the pros/cons of the material
        • Write 1-2 paragraphs explaining why you feel the material is sustainable or not
          • This can be the material in general  (ex. brick) or a specific type of the material (ex. metal, copper)

    Organization

    • Title page including your name, class and assignment title
    • Divisions organized by MasterFormat Division
    • Must be a commercial interior
    • Photo pages: Title (Division #, Division Title, Material) at top
      • Approx. 3 ½ by 5 photo labeled with location, date and time
      • Written explanation at bottom
    • Sustainability pages: Title (Division #, Division Title, Material) at top
      • Bullet point lists of pros/cons
      • Written explanation
    • This will be word processed, printed in color and bound with a staple or other mechanical fastener (NO ORIGAMI CORNERS!)
